Armed robbers have killed a yet-to-be-identified person as they attacked two commercial banks in Iree, Osun state.

According to reports, the robbers arrived at the banks some minutes to 4pm on Thursday and operated for about 15 minutes before they fled.

A student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, simply identified as Olaide, told Punch that the attackers escaped through Ada/Iree road shooting into the air as they fled the area.

“One person was shot. He is a man and he died instantly,” Olaide said
A resident Fisayo told The Nation the operation lasted for 15 minutes with the robbers shattering doors with bullets and dynamite.

“We heard gunshots around the Poly Junction. Some of my colleagues who ran from the scene informed us that robbers who came in three vehicles in their numbers attacked the two banks.

“They had already attacked a police station located in-between the two banks and in the process, one police constabulary was killed and others ran away.

“I saw two policemen running away, removing their uniform to prevent being identified.”

A student of Iree Polytechnic, Bukola Adeosun, said the robbers escaped the town around 4:18pm through Iree/Ada road.

“They conveyed themselves in four vehicles through Ada/Igbajo road. They were shooting to the air to scare us and threatened any security operatives that may check them.

“A student was shot but did not die. After those robbers left the students were protesting that those robbers left unchecked by the police and they were protesting.

“They carried the corpse of the constabulary to Ikirun police station. They were ranting and speaking ill of the police.”
The police spokesperson in the state, Yemisi Opalola, was also said to have confirmed the incident.

She revealed that members of the tactical teams had been deployed to the area.
