The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has lauded Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode for his commitment to the rehabilitation of federal roads in the state.

The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Abiodun Tobun, in Lagos on Sunday said that the state government had invested “heavily” on federal roads.

Specifically, Tobin said the House would collaborate with the state government on the reconstruction of the Lagos- Badagry international expressway,
“The repair of that road is ongoing though it is a federal road. The state government is spending heavily on that road, it has not been abandoned.

“The State’s Public Works Corporation has taken pains to fix 10 bad portions of the road.

“We should appreciate the government for repairing federal roads in this time of economic hardship, especially the Badagry expressway.

“It is an international road.
Customs are collecting revenue (duties) for the Federal Government on the goods that come into the country. The revenue go into the coffers of the Federal Government and not that of the state government.

“In spite of this, the state government is spending heavily on road infrastructure because of its love for the people,” the lawmaker said.

The legislator, representing Epe I, however, lamented the lawlessness and recklessness of some truck drivers, who he accused of damaging roads across the state.

Tobun urged truck drivers to always obey traffic laws and respect other road users to prevent losses on the highway.
According to him, the government is committed to opening up Badagry area with the ongoing light rail project.

Reacting to complaints that palliative measures on the road had been abandoned, he said the government had not abandoned it.

He recalled that the state government left some other projects in the state to repair the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, even when the state was not collecting revenue from the two ports in the area.

Tobun said the Public Works Corporation would continue to repair the road until when the reconstruction commenced.
